Recently, Brian Dunphy from Greensboro Community Television, Retired GFD Captain JE McCarter, Retired Pinecroft Sedgefield Chief Kendall McCarter and myself travelled to Winston Salem to interview the son and daughter of one of the first paid members of the Greensboro Fire Department in 1926, Sam Miller….We had a very informative and interesting conversation with David and Dottie, Sam’s children. They provided us with stories of riding on the fire trucks, station visits and brotherhood from that 1926 era and beyond. Some very interesting newspaper articles were discussed as well. One newspaper from that era was called “The Democrat”…..If you like GFD Fire Department History then take a listen to this roundtable discussion recorded by Brian Dunphy. David Miller sent me a text this morning of how much he enjoyed the video and was glad him and his sister got to honor his Daddy’s Legacy.

Local Artist, Frank Duncan provided the top header design of old Central Fire Station for the Greensboro Firefighters History Book Website. Central Fire Station in Greensboro NC opened in 1926 at the inauguration of the city’s paid Fire Department. At that time the department employed 47 men in 8 companies to operate its 10 fire apparatus divided among 5 stations. Over the years  the Station has served at various times as the site for Sunday school classes, a wedding, a funeral, band concerts, revivals, and during World War II housed up to 435 soldiers at one time.
